art > (RE)PRODUCTIONS

I build, rearrange, carve, and excise material from wheel-thrown and handbuilt clay forms. Using the body as a reference point, I explore the nature of its fragility and complexity through building, shaping, carving, eroding, rearranging, and relocating material. Through these creative processes, surface is activated with historicity of intrusion or agitation; form is given complexity and ambiguity through repetition and rearrangement. The process is driven by kinesthetic experience, which results in the material expression of an inner emotive reality. Born from these processes are alien and abstract artifacts resembling cellular, botanical, and human structures. These artifacts add to my ever-growing collection where forms are made sense of after the fact, and relationships are drawn in an active contemplative process, while the products take on their own life after they have been created. The Colony Series emphasizes surface’s effect on form; the Clutch Series explores how multiples relate to one another and their environment; and the Twinning Series concerns itself with division and dissection. These series are interconnected in their exploration of body as metaphor through reproduction, replication, and decomposition.
